[per press association.] Colonel Trimble at New Plymouth. New Plymouth, To-day. Colonel Trimble addressed the electors in town last evening, when he reviewed the events of last session. He commented at length on the conduct of members engaged in “stonewalling," and declared himself a strong supporter of the present Government. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried. Dusky Aspirants. Russell, To-day. The following are the nominations for the Maori member of Parliament :—Hone Mohi, Tawhia, Hunni Tawhinga, and Hore Kewetu. The show of hands was in favor of Hunui Tawhinga. For Cambridge, four candidates are nominated, viz. Major Tewheoro, Hamiori Mangakahio, William Hughes (half-caste), and Mita Kaika. Napier, To-day The following are the nominations for the East Coast Maori electoral district:— Henare Tomoana, William Kodgers (halfcaste), and Wi Peri Paretini Ngata. “Damages, Heavy Damages, Gentlemen.” Gisborne, To-day. M. J. Gannon has taken legal proceedings against the Poverty Bay Herald for publishing a slanderous and defamatory statement against him. Damages are laid at L 5,000. Come to Grief. Patea, To-day. The schooner Fleetwing, timber laden, from Hokianga, went ashore on the north bank in entering the river this morning, but will probably get off next tide. Hotel Burned. Dunedin, To-day. Eccles’ Hotel, Naseby, was burned down on Tuesday. It was insured in the Victoria office for L2OO.

Explosion of a Kerosene Lamp and its

Consequences.

Two cottages at Caversham were burned down this morning. The fire was caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp at ten o’clock last night. The neighbors thought they had put it out, but at three o’clock the flames burst out again and spread with great rapidity, some inmates getting severely burned in effecting their escape. Morrison’s house, in which the fire started, was insured for L2OO, and Hobson’s house adjoining, for L 275, in the National - 1 ! ,' r -; A
