A U STRAL IA N. [per reuter’s agency.] A Discovery. Melbourne, Yesterday. The Age to-day publishes a paragraph stating that a deficiency of LSOOO was recently discovered in the books of the Union Bank of Australia, and that an official who was implicated has since returned the money.

In connection with the recent disclosures in the Bank of Victoria, it is stated that Mr Matheson, the general manager, retires from his position, and that Mr Shann, the local manager in Melbourne, has resigned. Mr Laer, the manager of the Union Bank, declares that there is no foundation for the statement in the Age of to-
day regarding defalcations in that institution. More Small-Fox. Sydney, Yesterday. Two small-pox patients died from the effects of the disease to-day. Another fresh case has been reported to the Board of Health.
