ASHBURTON V. BOROUGH. The first of a series of matches between the Ashburton end Borough Cricket Clubs was opened up last night on the Domain ground. Mr G. W. Andrews captained the Ashburton men, Mr J. Hosk’ng acting in a like capacity for the Borough team. It was unfortunate that sufficient members were not in attendance to complete the respective elevens, but notwithstanding

this drawback an enjoyable gane wa •* played, the field being made up from auxiliaries from the opposite side. The light during the evening was very bad, and this, combined with the long grasi which luxuriates around the wicket, was detrimental alike to batsmen and field. As will be seen by the detailed score, the Borough men succumbed when only 28 runs had been obtained, of which Hosking contributed a well-earned The trundling of G. Andrews for the Ash* burton Club was very effective ; but with one or two exceptions, the fielding on both sides showed that mu h practice is needed before anything like proficiency can be obtained. When time was called, the Ashburton men had totalled up the respective score of 35, for three wickets.
