This match was played yesterday at Hagley Park, and the result showed that the Ashburton men were quite justified in challenging their formidable opponents, for, though they lost the game, they showed sufficiently good form to make it a tolerably close affair ; indeed, after only one day’s practice on first-class ground—that of Lancaster Park—they had so much improved in batting, bowling, and fielding, as to give promise of furnishing a first-class team as soon as there is a decent ground at Ashburton to play upon habitually.
