Captain James Skene, formerly of Sandhurst, who served with distinction during the Waikato war, died this morning. Captain Fraser is now the only surviving officer of the contingent raised in Victoria for New Zealand. The ’Frisco Mail. Wellington, To-day.

The Penguin, which left here on Thursday for Onehunga, will leave there at noon to-morrow with the San Francisco mail. She calls at Taranaki, and arrives here on Monday evening, and immediately proceeds South.

A Narrow Squeak. Lyell, To-day,

A nearly fatal accident happened at Inangahua Junction on Thursday. A teamster named Hanna was crossing with a loaded dray, and when in the centre of the stream the force of the current capsized the dray and the cargo was almost entirely destroyed. The driver was carried over the fall and narrowly escaped drowning. He estimates his loss at fully LIOO. This is the second accident that has occurred at the same place within a fortnight. The ford is daily becoming more dangerous. If a bridge is not erected at once the traffic will be almost entirely stopped. Charters Admits the Soft Impeachment. Christchurch, To-day. W. W. Charters was brought up on remand at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. He pleaded guilty to the charge of embezzling the funds of the Sydenham Building Society, but not to the charge of forgery. He was further remanded. Arrival of the Premier. The Hon. John Hall arrived this morning. He will probably address his constituents next Saturday. Important Sale of Racing Stock.

Ford and Co. held a sale of racing stock to-day. The following yearlings bred by Mr S. Nosworthy, were sold : Colt by Albany —No Name, 120 gs (Hon. W. Robinson) ; colt by Albany— Malice, 50gs (J. Brabarzon) ; colt by Korari—Awatea (the dam of Grip), 160 gs (Hon. W. Robinson) ; filly by Korari— Fallacy, 140 gs (Dr Prins.) Mr W. C. Webb’s Virginia Water was sold for 400 gs to Mr Murray, of Napier, and Mr Webb’s Amazon went for 200 gs to P. Butler. The Completed Roll. Dunedin, To-day.

The complete rolls shows 1,550 electors for Dunedin Central; 1,395 for Dunedin East; 1,220 for Dunedin South; 1,389 for Dunedin West, and 746 for Caversham.

The Appeal Court. The Otago cases for Appeal Court are Connor v Maokay; for Divorce Court, Hornby v Hornby and Morgan; Goldstein v Goldstein and Aubrey, decree nisi; Barley v Barley, decree absolute.
