ASHBURTON AND THE GRAND NATIONAL.
To the Editor.
S IK I see from an advertisement in your paper that the Secretary of the A.R.C. has called a meeting for 4 p.m. to-morrow to consider the offer of the Grand National Steeplechase Club to hold their next fixture at Ashburton. Now, sir, I think to-morrow, being the opening day of the C. J.C. Spring Meeting, a most unsuitable one on which to gather together a number of sporting men, and it is to be hoped the meeting will beadjourned to a day more favorable. Tb© matter of holding the next Grand National meeting here is solely one of funds, and I, as a lover of the sport, do trust that no stone will be left unturned to beat up the local tradesmen and sporting men, and i have no doubt that if the matter is energetically taken in hand, and a full meeting secured, we shall see the Greatest cross-country e'-ent in New Zealand contested within our county. But, as a preliminary, a full meeting of those interested is imperatively necessary, and I am afraid to-morrow is not the day for such a gathering.—l am, &c., Hoy, 7. Cl oss-Coitntry.
