INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the industrial Association took place after the meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Cheese and Butter Factory, Mr Bullock presiding. Mr Braddell*s motion tc advisability of forming a joint stock company of guarantors to assist personshaving an invention, and who are debarred from carrying out their ideas for lack of means was fully discussed, but though meeting with some approval it appeared on looking into to be unworkable. A circular was read from Messrs Joubeit and Twopenny, the promoters of several exhibitions '“in these colonies, re the proposed exhibition in Christchurch in March next, and making enquiries as to Ashburton exhibits for same. A sub-com-mittee was then appointed to canvass the; town for articles suitable for exhibition. In the course of the discussion which followed, it was suggested that it would come within the province 6£ the Association to endeavor to arrange for an Ashburton Court at the exhibition, and some members further suggested that with a view to bringing about so desirable a-consummation the Association should apply for the space : for proposed ■ court and pay the fee for same, as this wouldprobably induce many'persons to become exhibitors who would otherwise not entertain the thing. This idea did not, however, meet with general approval, several objecting that the Association had been (established merely to obtain and dissem-; inate information, and not to spend money. The Secretary and Mr J. Orr expressed themselves to the effect that the Association was of very little practical use. True it had been the means of* doing a good deal of good indirectly, but it gave no. practical result . As far as the dissemination of information went, why the public, if so minded, could easily obtain any information they wanted without the assistance of the Association at all. It would be perhaps better, therefore, with , a view to reducing expenditure to wind the concern up. With this object the Secretary was instructed to bring up a.list of all the liabilities in connection with the Association at its next meeting. '
