ASHBURTON CHEESE AND BUTTER FACTORY.

A meeting of the Provisional Directors of the ’Ashburton Cheese and Butter F&ctory was held last evening at the Upper. Chamber of the Town HalL There‘was a good attendance’, Mr_ T. Bullock occupying the chair. Mr Friedlander was unavoidably absent,' but an apology was made for him, and it was stated that he had received promises of support from several influential residents in the district. If was estimated that about 200 shares in the factory had already been taken up, or rather that promises to that extent had been made, and there is not the slighest doubt that the whole of the 1,000 shares will go off with .satisfactory rapidity. The wish of the Directors appeared to be that the shares should not be monopolised by the few, but that the benefits derivable from the concern ; should be made as general as possible;.’ It was decided to accept Mr Bbwron , 's offer to lecture for one week :at the principal centres throughout the district on the advantages of the factory system. His tour will commence on the 14th, and the programme was arranged as follows :—Town Hall, Ashburton, 14th; Willowby, Wakanui, and Ashburton Forks on the following days, and the Secretary, and “Messrs John Orr and Jameson were instructed to make the necessary arrangements, and to give the fullest possible publicity to the same. The opinion of the meeting was that no expense should be spared in obtainingfrom America the services of a thoroughly practical and competent manager, as on this the propable success of the enterprise largely depended: A letter was read from Mr John Grigg, offering the promoters 25 acres of land opposite the Flemington school on very reasonable terms. This place would form an excellent site, as it in the centre of a large cattle-raising district, from which the promoters have already had the promise of some 250 cows, within that is a short radius of the spot indicated by Mr Grigg. . A general meeting of ; the shareholders will be held in a few days time, at the close of Mr Bowron’s lecturing tour. The Secretary and the Provincial Directors were requested to accompany' Mr Bowron on hxs travels, and the Secretary and Treasurer will be in attendance to receive applications for and deposits on shares at the close of each lecture. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Directors at the forthcoming general meeting that the number of shares requisite to entitle the holder to a seat on the directorate should be fixed at 10.
