It is generally believed that there are hopes of a compromise being effected, and a settlement of the difficulties between the two Houses being arrived at. Homeward Bound. The P. and O. Company’s steamship Rosetta, with the homeward Suez mail, sailed from this port on Tuesday morning. Resigned. Adelaide, May 11. The Hon. G. S. Fowler has resigned his position as Colonial Treasurer in the Ministry owing to ill-health. His Place Filled. Adelaide, To-day. Mr W. B. Rounswell has been appointed Colonial Treasurer in the place of Mr Fowler, resigned. 116,000. Hobart, To-day. The census taken on 3rd April shows the population of Tasmania to be 116,000. The Bulletin Again. Sydney, May 11. The lessee of the Clontarf Pleasure Grounds, in the middle harbor, has brought an action for libel against the proprietors of the Sydney Bulletin on account of a paragraph which appeared some time ago in that paper. The trial commenced on Thursday, the sth inst., and will be continued daily, but ' it is unlikely that the case will be concluded this week. The action is attracting great attention, and the Court has been crowded dailv.
