ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

An ordinary meeting of the School Committee was held last evening, there being present—Dr Stewart and Messrs Hodder, Andrews, and St. Hill. An apology from the Secretary for nonattendance, on the ground of ill-health, was read. Instructions were given re procuring necessaries for cleaning inkstands and desks. The notice of motion standing in Mr St. H’ll’s name was adjourned till next meeting. The Secretary was instructed to ascertain the cost of putting the gymnasium in order, and apply to the Board of Education for a grant. The police report re non-attendance of children at school was received, and held over till next meeting. It was decided to leave the matter of coal and wood in the hands of the Chairman. The Head-master reported as follows : “ Mr Chairman and gentlemen,—During the past month the school has been visited several times by members of your Committee, and to-day Mr Edge (Inspector) commenced his work of examination throughout the school. As his full report will be before you soon, I shall only respectfully draw your attention to the following :—(1) Inkwells are required for the six new desks ; (2) staining for the blackboards; (3) supply of absentee notes; (4) removal of gallery from old infant room ; (5) the spouting round the roof of the schoolroom has been filled up in several places by sparrows.—l am, &c., Alexander Stott.” The report was adopted. The Secretary was instructed to got inkwells for the desks mentioned in the report. Messrs Orr and Felton were appointed Yisiting Committee for the ensuing month. The meeting then terminated.
