[im:r press association.] Cruelty to a Lunatic. Wellington, To-day. Whitelaw, late superintendent of the lunatic asylum, has just been arrested on an information laid under the Lunacy Act, for cruelty to the patient Mclntosh, as stated in the Commissioners’ report. At their Little Games Again. Opunake, To-day. The natives last evening commenced ploughing the road between Potohn and Parapara. Major Tuko has gone to arrest them. Sudden Deaths. Dunedin, To : day. Wm. Insley, a wood cutter, died suddenly at Purakanui on Thursday. James Green, a groom, of intemperate habits, died in the City Hotel stables. He had gone there in a drunken condition, and laid down. L 20,600 for a Character. Mr Proudfoot has issued a writ for L 20,000 damages against Mr Mackay, his late partner, for alleged defamation of character. ’ i • Another to the List. A five-roomed house at Mornington, ow-ned by Mr C. R. Bouman, and occnpied 'by M r Jones, was burned down this morning. ' The insurances are L2OO on ■the furniture in the South British and LIOO in the National.
