It is stated that persons attacked linger only for three, days. Local Self-government-A petition, numerously signed, has been presented to the Patea County Council, praying for a Road Board to be constituted on the Waimate Plains. The Council refused to accede to the request, the Chairman stating that the refusal would be the means' of bringing the whole question of local government before Parliament. It is believed that only three settlers on the Plains are opposed to the Road Board, and sixty signed in its favor. The census returns slfo w 120 people residing on the Plains, but a good many of them are working roadmen. Alleged Sheep Frauds. Wellington, To-day. Fred Marshland Hadfield has been arrested on a charge of being an accessory to the larceny from one Thomas, in the sheep case Which arises out :of the uncompleted sale of Abbottsford station, on the Taueru river, Wairarapa, by J. Gilligan to Hadfield*; the father of the accused, who, after making the purchase, attempted to draw /out of it, ■a6 action being, then brought against him in the Supreme Court to compel him to carry out his contract. . . Through other causes he* was, however, obliged to relinquish the property. It is now alleged that he sold one thousand sheep, which were included in the purchase of the station, although the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company had a lien upon them. A meeting of surveyors and civil engineers was held last night in connection with the formation of a New Zealand Institute of Surveyors andGivil Engineers, The report of the acting-secretary was read. It referred to the advantages which the institution would confer on the profession. The meeting was adjourned to afford time to procure information in connection with the subject. . Frozen Meat. Balclutha. To-day. At a meeting of the Committee of the Glutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society held last night, it was agreed to contribute L2O towards the preliminary expense of the Dunedin Committee for export of frozen meat.
