The Customs returns for the March quarter are L 9,439 17s. 9d., being an increase of LISBO over those of the corresponding quarter of last year. The Game of Life. The vital statistics for the month of March are : —Births, 38 ; marriage, 1 : deaths, 11. The Stamp Tampering Case. Wellington, To-day. William Donnes, late managing clerk for Brandon and Son, solicitors, was committed for trial on the first charge of ' tampering with land registration stamps, four other charges being heard against him. He reserved his defence. Only a Temporary Attack. Henry Anderson, on remand, charged with being of unsound mind, was discharged, Dr Johnston certifying that he had quite returned to reason. Property Tax. The following is the total Properly Tax paid to close of financial year:—Canterbury, L 58.081; Otago, L 55,303; Wellington, L 38,527 ; Auckland, L 33,474 ; Hawke’s Bay, L 14,251; Waitaki, L 12,106; Nelson, L 10,960; Southland, L 8,063. Total, L 220,765. The Slack List. Dunedin, To-day. The criminal calendar contains 10 cases, all of an ordinary natute. An Ounce to the Ton. The Cromwell Company’s months crushing yielded 419 ounces from 430 tons. Vital Statistics. Invercargill, To-day. Thirty-three births, twelve deaths, and six marriages were registered here during March.
