HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR AT LYTTELTON.

[Bv Telegraph. J Christchurch, To-day. The Government steamer Hinemoa arrived at Lyttelton shortly before ten o’clock this morning. The members of the Borough Council and a number of leading citizens of Lyttelton and Christchurch went on board, and were introduced to his Excellency the Governor by the Premier. On the Governor landing, a detachment of the Naval Brigade formed a guard of honor, and the Christchurch Artillery fired a salute. The party proceeded to the Colonists’ Hall, passing under a handsome triumphant arch en route. On arrival, addresses from the Borough Council and friendly societies were read, and the school children sang the National Anthem. The Governor subsequently visited the Borough Schools and graving dock, and expressed himself surprised at the size of the latter. He said he hoped it would he extensively used by the vessels of Her Majesty’s Navy, and said he trusted to be present at its opening. Returning to Lyttelton the party came on to Christchurch by special train. A large crowd were at the station, including the Mayor, members of the City Council, representatives of the several public bodies, the Primate, Justice Johnston, and leading citizens, the City Guards forming a guard of honor. Addresses were read from the City Council, the Selwyn County Council, and the Sunday School Union. The vice-regal party were afterwards conveyed in a four-horse drag through the city, the cavalry forming an escort. In Cathedral Square 1,200 children sang the National Anthem, which was followed by hearty cheers. After making a tour of the town, the Governor was driven to Coker’s Hotel, where he will reside during his stay.
