Blood Poisoning. Grahamstown, To-day. At the inquest on Mr. John Walker, civil engineer, held this morning, before Mr. Brassey, coroner, the following was the verdict —“ That deceased died from blood poisoning, caused by the bite of a spider.” The Wairarapa Races. Wellington, To-day. To-day was the first day of the Wairarapa Annual Races. The course is in splendid condition, and the weather beautiful. There are about 500 people present. The first event was the Produce Stakes, which was won by Whitan, after a grand race with Treasurer, Barbara being third. The Wairarapa Stakes were shorn of all interest by the scratching of Randwick, leaving Libeller to a walk-over. The Champagne Stakes were appropriated by Kilmore, followed home by Wanaka and Gentle Annie. Fire. Dunedin, To-day. A four-roomed house at Look-out Point was burned down last night. It belonged to Robert Spratt, and was insured for L 125 in a foreign office. A Cricketer Disqualified. The Cricket Association has disqualified W. J. Moore for three months for his conduct at the Australian match.
