The authorities are taking acti re measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Te Aroha. News from Te Aroha is of little importance. No rich finds have yet been made, but men are working steadily, anticipating a good average yield from the quartz. Wellington Anniversary Day. Wellington, To/day. To-day the weather is fine, but a strong breeze is blowing. To-day is generally observed as a holiday, being anniversary day. Rolling up.

The delegates from Dunedin, Caversham, Mornington, Naseby, Waimate and Wanganui have arrived to attend the Fire Brigades’ Conference. The others are expected to-morrow. The Conference meets on Monday. The Government and the Education Act. Dunedin, To-day. At All Saints parish, meeting, last night, the Rev. Mr. Fitchett stated that Wo members of the Government had informed him that they were favorable to an alteration in the Education Act, to give ministers an opportunity of imparting religious instruction in the public schools during school hours, at least twice a week. The Benefit of a Good Character. At the City Police Court this morning, Thomas Richardson, for embezzling moneys belonging to his. employers, Messrs. Martin ■ and Watson/ was sentenced to only twenty-eight days’ hard labor,- in consideration of the good Character given him by the prosecutors. Inquest.
