Mount Hutt Road Board.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board took place in the office, Mdthven, on January 15th. Present—Messrs. Jackson, Alington, Pannett, and M'Millan. Mr Julian Jackson was unanimously elected chairman for the year. The overseer’s report was read - and considered. Correspondence was read. Fi’om- Mr. John Devery, one of Mr, Arthur Devery’s sureties for shingle con- ! tract on Urrall road, asking for an extension of time of one month 'lf this wore granted he would complete the contract 'himself without any further delay. Granted. From Mr. Christopher West, objecting to the closing of road leading through sections No. 32001, 31196, and 25152. The: clerk was'instructed to inform. Mr. West that he could object at a meeting of ratepayers, which would be held for the consideration of closing of said road, due notice .of which would be given. From Messrs. Mason & Struthers, 're price of safes. It was left to the chairman to select one. From Messrs. Gould and Cariierion; stating that a portion of the Mount Somers Road Board district wished to join the Mount Hutt district, and giving their reason for doing so, and wishing to; know if this Board wore disposed to view the matter favorably. Tire clerk was instructed to reply to Messrs. Gould and Cameron, acknowledging receipt of their letter, and asking for information. as to the area of the portion wishing to join, the number of miles of road formed arid unformed in Said portion, and what amount of money it was likely to bring into the district. From the Ashburton County Council, re railway tariff, requesting the Board to asfist the Council in protesting against the present railway tariff. The Clerk was instructed to ■ write. to the County Council and thank them for their letter, and to infor the Council that they would do all in their power to assist the latter in protesting against the tariff. ' From Mr. Arthur Devery, • requesting an extension of time for his Urall contract. The Clerk to, reply that one of- his sureties had already been granted an extension. Mr. Alington reported that he had let a contract for cutting thistles on nine miles of road in his ward, • Approved. Mr. Pannett also reported that he had put on riien to cut the thistles on the roads in his part of the district. Approved. The Overseer was instructed to have the surface stones on Oairnbrae and Lyudhurat roads broken by day labor. After passing ac counts amounting to L 356 18s. 7d., the Board adjourned to Thursday, 10th February.
