Matson and Co. report ■on the Vhve&rick market, &c., for the week'Coding Thursday, January : 6tb, 1881, as follows: ~The Christmas holidays having now nearly orn cdn»e f fe’a first market in the new year, held yesterday, was characterised by a, Mtfle'more life and activity than has been the case of late. - 1 There was a large supply of all classes of sheep, and, as far as the sale and prices were concerned, it was the most satisfactory held for some time. Merino wethers represented a considerable portion of the entry in fat sheep, and although the bulk of these were sold at from 6s to 7s 3d, crossbreds were 1 more sought after,' and prices ruled is per head better upon an average than last week or the ' week previous. -We placed several lines of pcinife wetheis at.from Us to 11s gd, ewes 9s fid, light weights and inferior quality 8s ' to.gs.’; Jh fatores we sold -a of half, bred shorn-hoggets (in low condition) at 6s nd, and various-small lines at current rates. Prime lots made 8s to gs ; inferior 6s 6d to 7s 6d. In beef there was very little on offer, most ; of : the trade (having, cleared out their Christmas, supplies) were buyers. .%hers was a, better, demand than we have ’ Moticea for tome months; and most of the lines were placed, 'with considerable competition, at an advance of 10s per head in excess of late rates. ,; . The reason of this sudden : change can only be attributed to the very small market, and the chances are that next week a glut will again reduce values to the average of the past { Wttep’months. The store cattle market was conto a -few useful lines of two to three-year-Vfifpld mixed lots, but a thorough re-action in price seems to have set in, and very few were 501 d.,, The totals yarded for the day comprised ' 6,558 sheep, 253 head of cattle, and 78 pigs, of which ourentry included 4,530 sheep, 94 fat lambs, 194 head cattle, and 78 pigs.
