Reed writes, contradicting emphatically a statement made in the daily papers, that he has arranged with the Loan and Mercantile Company to take over a block of land in Poverty Bay for special settlers. Ho says he lias not had any transaction with any Loan Company in New Zealand, his arrangement with his special settlers precluding the necessity for any such arrangement. Patetere. Wellington, To-day. A German named L. Drexler, a watchmaker, was drowned early this morning. He was seen standing near the edge of the breastwork, and shortly after calls for help were heard, but he sank before he could bo rescued. An inquest will bo held. The cause of the attempt to destroy himself is supposed to be through inability to obtain work.
