Hanlan Defeats Trickett. 1 (Per Reuter’s Agency.) London , Nov. 15i The race between Edward Hanlan, of Toronto, Canada, and Edward; Trickett, of Sydney, for the sura of £2OO aside, the championship of the world, andthe Sports- ' ‘man’s Challenge Cup, took plaice to-day i over the usual course qn the Thames, be- | tween Putney and Mortlake. The greatest interest was taken in the race,;and the attendance of the public was enormous, t The betting at the start was greatly in favor of Hanlan, who was in splendid form. The weather was fine but cold. There was no wind, and the water was smooth. The men got away to a good start, Hanlan commencing with twentyeight and Trickett with thirty-four strokes - to the minute. They kept together for ' half-a-mile, pulling; evenly;. butt at the • Crabtree Inn, Hanlan took the lead and got clean away from Trickett, who was * ’ unable to recover his lost ground, despite J ‘ • the great efforts which he made. At Hammersmith, Hanlan increased his ad- ’ and thence forward 5 drew l away | from Trickett, whenever he approached, “ playing ” with him, in fact, for the last . three miles, and coming in an easy winner by fully two lengths. The time of the race was 26min. 12secs. Hanlan was enthusiastically cheered at the finish. The Feeling in Sydney. Sydney, Yesterday. Despite the general disappointment and heavy losses which have been sustained,, there is an universal and firm opinion here that Trickett lost the race fairly. s r ■■
