Consistency. —A German lost his wife, and the next week nmrried,again, and hia new wife asked him to take her out riding. He replied : “ You dink I ride out mid i anoder woman so soon after the death of mine frau ?” Elgin School.— A meeting of the Elgin School Committee was held on Friday evening; last in./the schpolhouse. ; The, members present were Messrs. J. Stanley Bruce (chairman), P. Innes, J. Keir, S. Scott, and T. Greenaway. The minutes of the last meeting, held on the 6th proximo, having been read"aud con-, firmed, the following statement from the Chairman was read and considered :—“ I 'have'purchased the requisite materials for the school blinds. The Board of Education granted the request of the Committee ' to he allowed to apply for an assistant, and I have advertised for applications, but 'without--receiving-—any response.—The Board states that it cannot grant jury thing?.--for incidental expenses beyond the regular allowance. Messrs. Sealy Bros, have replanted the trees : which died.' Now that the days have lengthened.it might be - ; well that the school opened at 9 a. in. instead of 9.30. The accounts before the Committee for payment, amount t0.L21 15s. 5d.” An application was handed in t 6 the Chairman from Mrs. Proudlock, for appointment as assistant mistress. •' It ’ was moved by Mr. P. Innes, and seconded by Mr. S. Scott, “That the Chairman communicate with the Board of Education and forward Mrs., Proudlock’s application for the post of assistant mistress, request; f ing to be informed whether the Board will appoint Mrs. Proudlock or prefer that the Committee should invite applications from other than certificated teachers.” Carried. Moved by Mr. P. Innes, seconded by Mr. S. Scott, “ That the school he now open at 9 a.m.” 'Carried.' Moved by Mr. J, Keir, seconded'by Mr. T. Greenaway, “ That next Tuesday and Wednesday,, tjje, . 16th and 17th instant, be granted for holidays.” Carried. Moved by Mr. P. Innes, seconded by Mr. P. Greenaway, “That the accounts before ; the Com-m ■' mittee, amounting to L2l 15s. 5d., be passed for -payment.” Carried. The ’ Committee then adjourned to Wednesday, the Ist December. - ;■
