(Per Press AsoociaHon.) An Hon. Debtor Arrested. Auckland, To-day.
The Hon. Claude Park, of Katikati, has been arrested at the suit of a Tauranga solicitor, for a debt of LIOO, on board the Ringarooma, en route for England. Abbott's Consultations.
The following are the winners in Abbot’s sweeps on the Melbourne Cup : (No. 1 sweep, L 5,000,) First prize, J. P. Robertson, Whangerei ; LI,OOO ; second prize, W. Foss, L 40 0; H. P, Bartlett, Auckland, L2OO. (No. 2 sweep, L 2800) First prize, T. Skellan, Whangarei, L 624 ; se c nd prize, W. G. Harper, L 416 ; the third prize of L2OB Jwas secured by 'an Auckland gentleman.
Presentation. Grahamstown, To-day. Kenny, late sub-inspector, is to be presented this afternoon with a complete set of surveyor’s instruments, with an address from the citizens and men of the Armed Constabulary. The Te Aroha Goldfield. The Government intend granting the Te Aroha prospectors nine men’s ground. The field will be opened about the 28th inst. Narrow Escape. Greytown, To-day. Hammich’s Rising Sun Hotel was discovered on fire at 2.40 this morning. The inmates had a narrow escape, some having escaped by sliding down the verandah posts. The hotel, stables, and outhouses were completely destroyed. It is not known how the fire originated. Insurances—South British and Mercantile, LI,OOO ; United, LSOO ; Imperial, LSOO ; Union, L 250 ; Colonial, L 250. The Lucky Dogs. Dunedin, To-day. In Cameron’s consultation, the first prize goes to a country settler, the second to a Dunedin insurance agent, and the third to Jock Graham.
