V.R.O. SPRING MEETING. First Day—Saturday, Oct, 30. (By Cable.) Melbourne, Oct. 30. The first day’s races of the Victorian Racing Club’s Spi’ing Meeting took place to-day, at Flemington. The weather was fine in the morning, but heavy rain fell in the afternoon. There was an immense

attendance. The racing was splendid. The following are the results of the several events : Melbourne Stakes, a sweepstake of 5 sovs each, with 150 added. For 3 yrs old and upwards. Weight for age. The finish in the last half mile was entirely between Grand Flaneur and Progress, and there was a grand struggle betwen them along the straight. The winner was a strong favorite. Time — 2min 44secs. Maiden Steeplechase, a sweepstakes of 10 sovs each, h ft, with 200 added. For 4yrs o.d and upwards. For horses which have never won a steeplechase. Horses which have never started in any steeplechase allowed 101 b.
