The Land Purchase.

It is rumored that Government will shortly remove all proclamations from land, the purchase of which they do not intend to complete, including the Patetere block. It is said Government intend to withdraw from their negotiations in the Arawa district, except those in Tepuki, which have been completed, Waitahanui, 40.000 acres, and two others aggregating 60.000 acres. The whole land under negotiation in Arawa district is estimated at a million and a half acres on which Government have made advances. The New Goldfield. Grahamstown, To-day.

The yield from 93 lbs. of stone from the now reef at Te Aroha is 2 dwts. of retorted gold. Another parcel of stone from a different part of the district has been lodged with the Warden to-day. It also shows gold. Not more than 30 men are on the new field, and little interest is taken in the subject. Excessive Rainfall. Gisborne, To-day.

The rainfall during the past two days was the greatest ever known in the district.

Serious Accident. Wellington, To-day.

A lad named Batkin met with a serious accident at the College grounds yesterday. He was playing with a heavy roller, when he slipped, and the roller passed over his head and shoulder, breaking one of his arms and fracturing his skull. He still lies in a precarious state.

Time Table and Tariff.

Mr. Maxwell has promised a deputation that the Government will revert to the August time-tables on the Northern railways. He said there were great difficulties in the way of assimilating the goods tariff on port lines to that on inland lines, as there were no facilities for weighing goods at Port Chalmers or Lyttleton.
