At the Police Court this morning, Hultn, proprietor of the Provincial

Hotel, was charged with allowing gambling in his house. Inspector Partly said the police were determined to put a stop to gambling in hotels, which had already caused the ruin of a number of young men in Auckland -Auci lano, Sept. 3.

The French vine glowers, under M. Lardoix, find that the land pointed out to tlum at Henderson’s Mill, for settlement on deferred payment, is private property, and that the land already granted by the Waste Linds Board for vine growing was a barren irreclaimable waste, intersected with deep ravines. They have abandoned their enterprise disgusted, after making all preparations and procuring 40,000 vines. Lardoix intends going to America. Gunner Pearce (whose election as SubLieut, A. Battery, was pronounced informal by Colonel Packe, of Wellington), has been re-elected.

Wellington, Sept. 2. At the annual meeting of the Racing Club held last night, the report shewed that the past season had been most successful, the Club having reduced its overdraft by nearly L2OO. The principal of appointing one handicapper for the colony was approved of, but details were left for future arrangements. The Stewards meet on Wednesday next to consider the advisability of holding a spring meeting. Wellington, Sept. 3.

Arrived—Anne Melhuish, barque, from Newcastle, with twenty-six passengers. One of them named Thomas Tynan, jumped overboard and was drowned. Every endeavor was made to rescue him, but unsuccessfully. The new form under the Property Tax Assessment which has been adopted will be issued'next week. It is probable the time for sending in the returns will be extended to the middle of next month.

The Post to-night says it is understood that a preliminary sale of lands in the Waimate Plains will be commenced on the 25th of next month. The block which is to be placed on the market contains 7,000 acres of the finest land in the colony, and the price is said to be L 4 for cash, or L 5 for deferred payments, the latter extending over 10 years. Wainui, Sept. 2.

Jas. Armstrong, of Akitio, and his nephew, Archie Armstrong, were drowned in the Akitio river yesterday morning whilst crossing with some cattle. Armstrong, the elder, after crossing safely, went back into the river to head some cattle, and his horse got into the quick-, sands, plunged, and turned round sharp, throwing its rider. His nephew rode in to rescue him, and getting hold of his shoulder, his horse either took fright or also got into the quicksand, commenced buck-jumping and threw young Armstrong, and continued bucking on top of both men, who were not seen to rise afterwards. The bodies had not been recovered at 2 p.m. Several persons saw the occurrence, but were not close enough to render any assistance,

Dunedin, Sept. 2.

The Star has authority for saying that Mr. Conyers’ telegram, posted at Christchurch yesterday, rs railway employees’ pay, was cancelled several days ago. The new scale of wages to he introduced by the department will certainty take 10 per cent, off all officers down to stater - masters, but is not expected scai'cely to affect day men or porters and surface hands. Mr. Oliver telegraphs that if it is intended to reduce the wages hands due notice shall be given.

Invercargill, Sept. 2.

The townspeople are thoroughly aroused about the alteration of the Government railway time table, and determine to protest against it. Strong resolutions were carried at a meeting of the Chamber’of Commerce yesterday, and to-day the Mayor, complying with an influential requisition, convened a public meeting for Monday evening. Four boys were sentenced to flogging and imprisonment for stealing fowls. Invercargill, Sept. 3.

Mr. M'Caughan is to be entertained at a banquet by the Winton portion of his constituents, in recognition of his services. Brother Caldwell, of Dunedin, opens a Mark Masons Lodge here next week. Another reef has been struck a mile west of Port Long wood. Mr. J. P. Joyce, ex-member for Wallace, has received a requisition to stand for Waikaia. Mr. Feldwick, late member for Invercargill, was also communicated with, but declined.
