Advices from Mauritius report that the sugar market is firm. Harvest operations are however hindered by bad weather.
Melbourne, Sept. 3.
In the Legislative Assembly last night, the Speaker, Mr. Lalor, read a paper controverting the views expressed by the Governor in replying to the Address in Reply regarding the transation of business before the speech had been delivered. The discussion on Mr. Lalor’s statement was adjourned. Government have decided to issue the balance of the two million loan in the London market in the middle of October. Sydney, Sept. 2. Arrived —Australia, from Auckland, with the inward San Francisco mails. Sailed —Wakatipu, for Wellington. The case against the Sydney Evening News, for contempt of Court, for making comments on Judge Windeyer’s summing up in an action for libel, has been adjourned for one week. Brisbane, Sept. 1.
A discovery of diamonds is reported as having been made. At Inverell the blacks bailed up a station, and killed a black boy.
