Fearful Tragedy
AT KYEBURN DIGGINGS. — A WOMAN MURDERED BY THE CHINESE. [by telegraph.] Dunedin, Aug. 4. A fearful tragedy occurred last night at Kyeburn diggings. Mrs Young, a highly respectable elderly widow women, living alone, but with Chinese in proximity, was found brutally maltreated. She died this afternoon, having been conscious for a few minutes only. Great distress is felt throughout the district in consequence of the horrible proceeding. The motive for the crime appears to have been robbery, as the contents of Mrs Young’s purse were taken, together with her watch, trinkets, etc. The house was broken into, and evidently stones had been used to force an entrance, as tw r o boulders were found inside marked with blood. The murdered woman was in good circumstances, and was universally respected.
