EMIGRATION TO THE CAPE FROM PORT PHILIP.
From the following notice itwill be seen that this Colony has just received an accession to its population by the immigration of some of the inhabitants of a sister colony* "GOVERNMENT NOTICE. ■' Colonial Office, « Cape of Good Hope,2d May, 1844. "Several Trades-people, domestic servants, and others, having arrived irom Port Philip, for .the purpose of settling in this colony, andfas upon this unexpected importation oflabour.'they may, obtain employment, be induced to engage their services at lower rates than is consistent with their proper maintenance, or is usual here. " And His Excellency the Governor, considering this addition to the labouring popluation of much importance to the colony, and that the individual* in question require and deserve such assistance as the Government is enabled to afford them ; Notice is hereby giyen, that His Excellency the Governor has requested the Honourable Harry Rivers, Esq., TieasurersGeneral C' C. Mitchell, Surveyor General, to advise the said persons both as respects the rate oS remuneration which they ought to obtain, aod the character of the service proposed to them. " These people consist of 3 house carpenters, 2 house servants, 1 butcher, 1 stone mason, and 1 Quarryman, married, and,—AVith two exceptions —with fami.ies ; and 2 stone mason?, 1 coachman, 1 shepherd, 1 gardener,l teacher, 1 bntcher, 1 house carpenter, 1 blacksmith, and 1 malster unmarried. , , " The residence of these persons may be known on applicatioh to this Office. «' By His Excellency's Command, "f Signed) JOHN MONTAGU. «' Secretary to Government."
