WHALES AT MANUKAU.
A gentleman just arrived from the west coAst states that u on Saturday several Whales (apparently cows and calves} were sporting about the Manukau Harbour for some hours, and might have been captured had there been a boat with gear at the township.” It is really a pity that, in these hard times, such valuable prizes should be allowed to escape, and it is to be hoped that, by next season, we shall be in a condition to draw wealth in the winter from our valuable harbours as well as from our fertile fields in the summer.
Since writing the above we understand that one of our early settlers, and who is well acquainted with what is necessary for the proper management of whaling establishments intends, during the ensuing summer, to proceed to one of the sister-clolonies for the purpose of making arrangements for the outfit of two or three stations on the east coast* We sincerely wish him’success.
