The Parkhurst Boys.
There is a very well written article in the Times of yesterday on the subject of the Parkhurst Boys. We wish we had. time and space to notice it more at length. But at this moment it is too late to do more than observe upon one or two inaccuracies, which we are inclined to attribute more to ‘‘zealous haste” than anything else, In matters of this nature it is as well to stick to facts. Now from, our Contemporary’s observations, it would appear that out of ninety two young persons who formed the valuable freight of the St. George, some nine or ten only have “got into troubled ’ What is the case as given in the records of the Police Court? twenty-seven boys at various times have made their appearance at the “ Bar of that House,” aud many of these more than once, of the St. George’s boys J Then as to the “ empty wooden house, without doors or windows in which said juveniles are folded like sheep at sundown,” &c., &c. This house is in good repair, and a much more eligible residence than that inhabited by ourselves when we were first set ashore at Auckland. The fact is that without putting the Home Government to extraordinary expense on their account. The local Government, we think, has done as much as possible towards caring for these little wretches, we beg our kind-hearted contemporary’s pardon—“ unfortunates/* we should have said. The Chronicle had never any wish to press heavy upou these youths—its columns were blank on the subject for many a day after their advent. But when oft reiterated proofs of the mischief accruing from them, come before us. When letter after letter filled our box, alien the same unvarying cry, the pages of this paper were opened to expressions of the Truth, and we did raise our feeble voice 'o induce our Townspeople to make known to Her Majesty’s Government, their sentiments regarding this invasion of our rights—for it is nothing less. Our advice —our entreaty was unnoticed— et eu evila les fruits.
