PORT NICHOLSON.
On Thursday last the Kate, Captain M'Farlane, arrived from Port Nicholson, bringing papers up to the 22nd July. We perceive that the Wairoa massacre has stimulated the settlers to form a volunteer corps, and four hundred men are being drilled two hours each day. It is Said the men display much tact in the use of arms, and the propiiety of wearing an uniform dress is suggested. There is also a Committee who are most active in drilling the men, as well as superintending the erection of fortifications. Ice. Ac. We hope and trust there will be no occasion for a display of their prowess.
Since the above was ia type, we have received our files of Port Nicholson papers by the lady Leigh to the 2nd. instant. Major Richmond had issued a Proclamation which will be found in our columns, together with such extracts as our space will admit of this publication. We also perceive that the late Mayor of Port Nicholson, George Hunter, Esq., died on the night of the 19th July, and Alderman Guy-ton had been appointed, by the Council, Mayor.
