27 October 1848 From Wairarapa Young man, Governor Grey, Greetings. Sir, Governor, we have agreed to sell our land. We have just agreed to give over our land. Each of us who has a right in owning the land agree, but in opposition there are some Maori who say Wairarapa is theirs. Well, sir, the strength of those that held on, is nothing now. Now, we have agreed about the right to release it. Our strength lies in the committed agreement of us all, and so you can know that all the chiefs of Wairarapa agree to give over our land. Young man, this statement is indeed true, don't say we are lying, it is indeed true. This is our agreement to you, but you also have a part in agreeing with us. If you agree at once, then be quick to take the letter to Captain
