In prosecuting the Surveys of the Native Reserves, and such and such lands as may be purchased from the Crown by settlers and others, it is highly desirable that the Native Reserves should be surveyed; but in cases where the selection of the white settler is situated in proximity with the Native Reserves, the boundaries of both may be surveyed before quitting that neighbourhood; as this will be a means of saving time. When all the Native Reserves are completed, the lands of other purchasers may be attended to. This is given to you only as a general outline of the proceedings, which I consider most desirable; as, from your knowledge of the country, as well as the best and most speedy method of carrying out the Surveys, much of course must be left to your own discretion. With regard to mapping your surveys, it will be necessary that you should make at least two copies of each map. One copy you will be good enough to forward to Wellington, to be deposited in the Survey Office there. Another copy must be kept in your own office in the Wairarapa District. You will be good enough to communicate with me from time to time, such information as you may obtain, with regard to the nature of the country; its productions, etc.,
