Anauthority for the expences connected with the accommodation and maintenance of these chiefs will be necessary. It is submitted that it is desirable that the chiefs should come up to Auckland in the manner proposed, in preference to any of them being sent up from Hawke's Bay per ''White Swan'' on her return trip, as it would afford the Native Secretary ample opportunity to prepare them for the consideration of thosematters which it is His Excellency's intention to bring under their notice at the forthcoming meeting, and the chiefs themselves would much prefer such an arrangement. Donald McLean.
