Wairoa 3rd. September 1868 To Mr. McLean, Salutations to you! Friend, this is our word to you! The Hau Haus have established themselves at Te Papuni, at Puke Tapu. We are busy fortifying our Pas --- Te Hatepe, Waihirere, Te Ruataniwha, Ngamotu, Matiti, and Ramoto. We are labouring under a want of provisions; we, the old folks; as the young men are constantly drawn away to fight, and keeping sentries. Therefore we request that you will send us some provisions, in order that we may be in a proper position to fortify our Pas --- some flour, and sugar. That is all. There are some letters about land tenure; these letters include information about various sales and the creation of reserves, boundary disputes, and notice of the occupation of a piece of land with disputed ownership.
