Waikanae 9 June 1848 My dear friend, McLean, Greetings. Your letter to your children has reached me. And now I write back to you. So, to inform you of the number of us living here - and there is no person left out: there are 39 men, 25 women, 6 boys, and one girl. That is all of us at the valley end. Seen at the church - though not Herewini and the others but adding them in, there are 77 men of Waikanae living here, excluding those at Te Uruhi, Whareroa and Te Paripari - they are not recorded in this letter. Neither did I count the women of Herewini and the others; I've only noted the men, as I did not get there to enquire about them, and the children too. But leave it and I will write of that to you. Friend, McLean, listen. I am still considering building a good home for us in Manawakaiwharehou [?, or, Manawakai, a new house]. The people of that part may not agree with me. However, we have not yet discussed it publicly to know whether it would be refused or agreed to. That part is not the best land.
