7 May 1850 Friend, McLean, We, that is, all the chiefs of Ngati Te Upokoiri who met together at Te Awahou, write this our message to you. The issue that gave rise to our meeting was the talk about our land of Patea. The reason for our making a statement was in relation to the behaviour of many tribes who want to take possession of my land. Hence we suggest that you come here so we can see you and we can all talk about Patea and Otara. Come so we may demonstrate to you our desire. Now, sir, be informed of those of this letter: From Hetariki, Te Wirihana, Te Wirihana, Ngapapa, Te Herewini, Te Watene, Hoete, Temuera, Mita, Pirimana, H. Rameka, Rawiri, Rawenata, Renata, Te Tutere, Te Mina, Mangatahi, Horima, Pawe Now, when you see our explanation written above, we will have returned to Moutoa. If you come here, and that is for you to decide, then come here, it will be all right; and if you go to Moutoa, that will be all right too for then we can all talk. That's all I have to say to you.
