First intimation received by Mr. Williams, R.M. of the District, was on 28th. He proceeded to the scene of the murder immediately. The accused retired from the village, threatening that he would take the lives of any persons sent to apprehend him. Mr. Williams demanded prisoner to be given up to justice. Tribe assented, but would give no assistance. Hon. Dr. Pallem, acting in the absence of Hon. Native Minister, instructed Mr. Williams to go through the formal investigation according to law, not to issue warrant, for the apprehension of prisoner. If warrant could not be immediately acted upon with safety, he must wait and induce natives to assist. Following out these instructions, assisted by a number of the most influential Chiefs in the North, went to Whangaroa, and had several Meetings with the tribe of the offender, announced that Papei should stand his trial in the Supreme Court; but asked that he might be allowed time to take leave of his friends. Mr. Williams, while admitting that the proceeding was not according to rule, still, for the sake of peace, and the difficulties surrounding the case, hoped that the Government would approve. The accused murderer is now in Auckland. (Signed) Hy. Ty. Clarke 10th. June 1874.
