of the most influential Chiefs in the North, went to Whangaroa, and had several Meetings with the tribe of the offender, announced that Papei should stand his trial in the Supreme Court; but asked that he might be allowed time to take leave of his friends. Mr. Williams, while admitting that the proceeding was not according to rule, still, for the sake of peace, and the difficulties surrounding the case, hoped that the Government would approve. The accused murderer is now in Auckland. (Signed) Hy. Ty. Clarke 10th. June 1874.
