Letter from William Fox, Principal Agent, N.Z. Co. to the Honble, the Colonial Secretary, Returning Mr. McLean's letter relative to the Interior line of Rangitikei purchase. dated 26th. July 1850. COPY. New Zealand Company's Office Wellington. 26th. July 1850. Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter addressed by Mr. McLean to yourself, relative to the Interior boundary line of the Rangitikei purchase; and which, by order of His Excellency the Lieut. Governor, has been referred to me. The importance of defining the internal boundary I think is very great; as any doubt about its position may lead to serious interference with the settlers, by the natives. As regards the fittest time and most economical method of affecting it, I would request that Mr. Park, the Principal Surveyor of the New Zealand Company, who is now on the spot with two assistants, may be consulted. From what he has stated to me, I conceive he thinks it could be done now as well as at any other time; but at all events I am quite willing to leave it to the discretion of Mr. McLean and Mr. Park to say when it should be undertaken. I shall write to the latter by this mail, informing him of your communication; and would beg to suggest that you should instruct Mr. McLean to consult with him about it, and as far as it is a mere question of surveying, to be guided by his opinion. If any question arises as to the Natives taking part in it, of course Mr. McLean will be the most competent judge. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) William Fox. Principal Agent N.Z. Company. To:- The Honble, the Colonial Secretary, New Munster.
