Recommended: C.W. Richmond. June 9/60. Approved: T. Gore Browne. June 9, 1860. Recommended: That the Native Secretary should proceed in the Steamer ''White Swan'' to Wellington; That Mr. Baker of the Land Purchase Department should be landed from the Steamer at Hick's Bay, for the purpose of inviting the Native Chiefs of the East Cape District, with whom he is well acquainted to come to the meeting in Auckland;- proceeding thence in company with the Chiefs Houkamau Mokena Kohere, and others to Poverty Bay at which place they will embark for Auckland. It is suggested that the White Swan should be detained at Ahuriri for a few days, if the Wongawonga is not there for the purpose of affording sufficient time for the Native Secretary to collect and take on to Wellington the chiefs of that District who may be invited to the Meeting. The White Swan should also call at Castle point for the Chief Potangaroa, and at Flat point for Wereta Kawe Kairangi. The Wairarapa chief may be communicated with from Wellington, and proceed thither by land. At Wellington the native Secretary might charter the ''Wongawonga'' to proceed to Manawatu and Whanganui, and thence to Queen Charlotte's Sound; also obtaining one vessel or more to bring the whole party from Wellington to Manukau. Should the ''Victoria'' or any other Government Steamer be in Wellington, it may be a saving of expence to send part of the chiefs up in her. In the event of a large steamer not being available for this service the Wongawonga'' should also be chartered if necessary to come up to Manukau. Anauthority for the expences connected with the accommodation and maintenance of these chiefs will be necessary. It is submitted that it is desirable that the chiefs should come up to Auckland in the manner proposed, in preference to any of them being sent up from Hawke's Bay per ''White Swan'' on her return trip, as it would afford the Native Secretary ample opportunity to prepare them for the consideration of thosematters which it is His Excellency's intention to bring under their notice at the forthcoming meeting, and the chiefs themselves would much prefer such an arrangement. Donald McLean.

Tapuhiitemdescription Includes papers relating to the activites of Ngati Toa and its allies along the Kapiti Coast at Wainui, Whareroa, Te Uruhi, Waikanae, Otaki, Ohau, and Porouatawhao ca 1860. This was a period when the colonial settlers at Wellington thought themselves to be under imminent attack by Ngati Toa and others. Wi Tako Ngatata's activities were under suspicion as well (ie Wi Tako left the Hutt Valley with a mounted escort of sixty seven well-armed men from Waikanae and Whareroa).
