"Wellington" Aug. 28th 73 Dear Sir, I see that the Hon.Mr.Fox has tabled a motion for the production of all papers respecting my past connection with the Government -- I have briefly to say -- That in view of the fact that I have now had a case pending in the Supreme Court for months past and which will come on for hearing in Oct. that the course taken by Mr. Fox must very seriously prejudice my position -- What may fall from Mr.Fox in the House will surely tell against me whether such statements be true either in whole or in part and I have no opportunity afforded me of rebutting them or explaining them. "Ihaka Wanga" long since exonerated me from any intention of injuring him and as a matter of fact I alone was the sufferer -- Again in the West Coast Commission the report of Col.Russel was so unsatisfactory to me that I brought the action against the Chronicle to bring out the points which Col.Russell determined against me, but which he added "might not have satisfied a Court of Law". In respect to the suspension of my License I cannot bring myself seriously to believe that Government can possibly give credence to the report made against me -- Every argument that sense and reason could dictate is against it -- Again I must lay stress upon these facts that in respect of my Employment on the West Coast it was unsought by me -- that it has nearly proved ruinous to me as the labors of many years hard work have been lost in consequence and I am now placed in a District where it is almost impossible for a professional man to obtain a living unless he is employed by the Government. I do not think I have deserved the treatment I have met with I am unaware of having injured any one in any way -- and cannot in the smallest degree account for the bitter hostility that has dogged my steps from the day I left Napier until now. Even the plans I conceived of private business I have deferred to you and am still waiting until you shall think fit to give me an answer -- In conclusion I must ask you to protect me so far as in truth and justice you can -- I am dear Sir Your most obed.
