STAFF OFFICERS HELD IN WELLINGTON, The above photograph includes the principal Staff Officers in New Zealand, those who have seen active service in the present war being- indicated by a star *. DEATH OF NEW ZEALAND’S PIONEER AVIATOR, MAJOR J. J. HAMMOND, WHO WAS REPORTED KILLED ON SEPTEMBER 23 WHILE ON ACTIVE SERVICE.—SOME CHARACTERISTIC SNAPSHOTS TAKEN OF THE BRILLIANT YOUNG AIRMAN DURING HIS SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION FLIGHTS MADE IN AUCKLAND FIVE YEARS AGO. (1) The late MAJOR J. J. HAMMOND, who was one of the first aviators to enlist for active service in Europe when the war broke out. (2) Major Hammond in company with a group of friends in Auckland.—From left: Messrs. W. Lowe, A. Linley, R. Singer, Major Hammond, Messrs. Levin, Rud Petersen and E. Page. (3) Major Hammond flying in the direction of Mt. Hobson during an exhibition flight in Auckland.
