The Goat Island Groan was a weekly typewritten camp magazine of the 60 Battery stationed on Motutapu Island in 1941 during World War II.
According to its third issue, due to scarcity of paper The Goat Island Groan was only able to put out a six-page issue occasionally and asked its audience not to ‘moan when you see that there are only four in this’ (29 September 1941: 1).
The Goat Island Groan featured camp and sporting news, jokes, as well as regular features ‘Who’s Who on Motutapu’ and the ‘Chronicles of Augustus Octavius’. Some issues even pay tribute to the Battery Mascot ‘Tuppy’, the chief goat of Goat Island who passed away after overindulging in some poisonous weed. An obituary was published stating he will be ‘sadly missed by all, especially the Engine Room Boys’ (4 October 1941: 4).
It is not known what became of the Goat Island Groan, with only four issues available from September to November 1941.
