HISTORY IN THE MAKING
(by ’’Mac 1 ’) - -■Early in February Military history was made in Now. Zealand. We refer .to tho. first crossing of tho treacherous Waimak . by anti-tank gun.- . Early in the afternoon four heroes, who shall be nameless, set • intrepidly forth from the South bank and. struck out manfully, for the opposite shore. : /• As the afternoon slowly passed the excitement grew more and more ... intense. Oould they do it?- Would those heroes roach tho other'side or be forever engulfed by tho surging river-? Who know? Who cared, anyway? Nearer and nearer they draw to tho bank, battling manfully until at last tho keel grated on tho .shingio. Thon a groat cry wont up from tho onlookers. Damn it, they hadn’t tipped up after all. r .-. . Wearily they struggled ashore but a groat light was in thoir oyos, which however . was quenched as they were surrounded by Colonels, Majors and other forms of Army life. Here we leave them. Heaven- help them, for they wore bravo mon and do served a bettor fate. - ■
