SITTING ON IT.

IN few places in the world today can one literally sit on mineral wealth to the tune of millions* It can be 1 done in New Caledonia: it is done every time we take a walk across the hills and sit down. Here is a quote from a report on the mineral resources of the island; - • Tho mineral resources are enormous* Apart n from nickel and chrome ores* •••there are large deposits of iron, manganese and cobalt; while anti* f mony, mercury»cinnabar, copper, lead , silver and gold have been found in quantity ..♦•There are considerable deposits of ’ caol. • • % ’ Furthermore, official i figures show that over the period 1930-8 New Caledonia supplied 12# of the world’s nickel $ 10*5 £of the world’s chrome. n:: Members of our Unit who are mining men say the ground is no more than scratched.
