THE KING’S TRIBUTE

New Zealanders’ Gallantry

The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, has received the following telegram from the King in reply to a message sent to His Majesty on June 9•— . ' '

“Please convey to the Government and people of New Zealand my cordial thanks for their message of good wishes in connexion with the official celebration of 4 my birthday and assure them how greatly the Queen and I appreciate its generous terms.

“I would like the people of New Zealand to know of the admiration with which we in the Mother Country have watched the heroic struggle of their troops in Crete, fighting alongside other Imperial forces, as well as our brave Greek Allies. We' grieve to think that owing to circumstances .outside their control the resistance of these gallant men could not be indefinitely maintained. Nevertheless, the Empire and her Allies owe a deep debt of- gratitude to the defenders of Crete for the heavy blows inflicted on the enemy, not the’ least in., the disturbance of his plans. The indomitable courage of the New Zealanders has indeed’ brought fresh honour to the Dominion that is their home.”
