FROM DARGAVILLF. By a nerve specialist, Dr. J. F. McKeddie, of Melbourne. “I w’on’t harrow you with the horrible effects of alcohol here. But let me just say this in passing. Drink seems to grease the skids on every track that lead: • perdition. It accelerates, for exampic, tuberculosis. A man whose lung has been healed up takes to alcohol, and soon comes hack with the disease ter. times more firmly established. Alcohol increases it, and presently sends it surging upwards to the brain.”
DISTRICT CONVENTIONS— Contd. “Service of Memories” were condacted by Mrs. Day. In the absence of Mrs. Duxfield, Mrs. Chesswas read extracts of the report of the annual meeting of the N.Z. Alliance, which gave a great deal of valuable information. Major (S. V) led the owning Devotions for the afternoon session. She spoke of the “Battlements round the home.” The four walls should be Reverence for God, Sabbath Observance, Family Worship, and Tcmjcrance. Reports were received as follows MOW., Mrs. Day; Hospital Visiting, Aramoho, Raetihi and Wanganui Central. Mrs. Ogier reported 153 names on the Cradle Roll, and Mrs. Day reported on the w’ork of the Crippled Children Society. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mrs. Chesswas; YKe-Presidents, Mesdames Duxfield, Day, Clancy and Sandford; Secretary, Mrs. Ogg; Treasurer, Miss Christie; Superimendents of Departments were also appointed. Mesdames Day and Chesswas were elected representatives to the N.C.W. Long Service Badges were presented to Mrs. Good of Aramoho, for 30 years of continuous service, and Mrs. Chesswa* for 20 years of the same. Votes of thanks to all helpers were carried. A special tribute was paid to the late Mrs. Pervman. [Reports held over for December issue —North and South Canterbury.)
