WORLD’S WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
Rest Cottage, Evanston, Illinois, U S.A., June 23rd, 1926. Dear Comrade, On the first of this month, 1 wrote you of the great loss we have suffered in the World’s W.C.T.U., in th* passing onward of our dear Mrs Mary D. Tomlinson. To-day, with a sad heart, I must let you know that another most active and beloved leader at the head of a department has been called home. Our comrade, Mrs Martha H. Allen, of Forest Hill Gardens, Long Island, New York State, after a short illness, passed away June 19th, at her summer home at Long Beach, Long island. Mrs Allen was the director of the Department of Medical Temperance in both the World's and the National W.C.T.U. organizations. For many years, Mrs Allen has created public opinion among physicians in favour of non-alcoholic medication. Her book, “Alcohol a Dangerous and Unnecessary Medicine’ has had a wide sale. Mrs Allen has been a public benefactor in giving publicity to the fraudulent ami dangerous character of many socalled patent medicines which in reality were largely of alcoholic content. We are sorely bereft in the earthly loss of these devoted women, who have given many years of wholehearted service to our glowing cause. We shall think of them in Miss Willard’s words, as born into beaut: and born Into bloom, and shall believe they are ministering spirts to us who miss their comradeship, their unwavering zeal and their unfalterin faith in ultimate victory. Affectionately, ANNA GORDON. Presided.
