JUVENILE CRIME. THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
(To the Kditor.) Madam, Mr McCarthy, (bust < huicli Magistrate, has stated that the increase of Juvenile crime in New Zealand is due to our State education Svjjcm. which excludes the Bible; lie also stated that all education should he on a leligious basis. Permit me to suggest that the New Zealand \\ C T.C., who like the American \Y.C. T I\. believe in the principle of Bible reading, and only disagree upon the svstem to be adopted approach tTie Rev. R. S. Cray, the successful No License Organiser, and ask him to oiganise a private conference of dele g.jtes from all lug churches, and the N /.. Teachers’ Association, for the puniose of formulating a Bible in Schools’ plan like that in vogue in England, Scotland, and l .S.A., whereby every scholar will get some knowledge of the literature and high
moral teachings of the Bible without sectarian comment. I would advise interested readers to peruse the new work on education entitled “The Schools and Empire,” by Cray, a
“schoolman highly placed.” lie favours religious instruction. The* above work is in most c lty libraries. W ith the grow th of c hurc h or voluntary day schools our State Svstem is being undermined, as most parents want their children educated in the Bible. - I am, etc.,
